Cervicogenic Headache Treatment & Relief
Headaches are not “normal”. When we see patients and help resolve their headaches, they very often tell us how they put up with them for years as they thought it was normal. Its very easy to excuse a headache because you have had a busy day, you are tired, you haven’t drunk enough, but if you are experiencing 2-3 headaches a week, or more than 1 acute headache a month, this has to alert you to a problem.
Headaches can vary in severity and frequency but the good news is that the most common cause for adult head pain, is typically cervicogenic headaches. This refers to headache from the neck. In many of these cases there isn’t even any neck pain and so the cause of the headaches gets misdiagnosed for months or years. The nerves in the upper neck travel through spaces within the bones (vertebrae).
These spaces are formed via joints and consequently if the joints become very tight, the space where the nerve sits becomes slightly narrowed. In these instances the body has no choice but to generate pain to make you aware of an issue. Since these nerves supply the head and the face, the result is pain radiating into these areas. We typically refer to this as a headache. This headache could vary in severity to a “muzzy head”, “feeling hungover”, “unable to concentrate” (terms patients often use), but they can also be very severe and result to the patient resorting to their bed with very intense head pain.

As diagnosticians we are also able to distinguish between these types of headaches and cluster headaches, migraine headaches and other types of presentations which we may feel require different techniques and treatments.
